Listen, I just watched the most revealing interview with Adam Mosseri (Head of Instagram) and I'm still processing everything he dropped ... because FINALLY the truth came out.

First off, shout out to Brock Johnson for asking the questions we've ALL been wondering about.

Let me break down the biggest takeaways that will change how you approach Instagram in 2025:

The TRUTH About Reach (Finally!)

Mosseri straight up admitted something we've all been feeling...reach fluctuates and it's not always your fault! Here's what's actually happening:

β€’ There's more content being created than ever before

β€’ The world changes (holidays, seasons, major events) affect reach more than algorithm changes

β€’ Small algorithm tweaks happen DAILY (not just when you notice a drop)

But here's the part that hit different : Instagram is NOT suppressing reach to make you buy ads! Adam said it makes zero business sense because "we have over 10 million advertisers... we are more than happy to grow engagement with one group of people and then sell ads to a different group."

Now do you believe him is a different story.

Hashtags Are DEAD (For Real This Time)

I got a lot of hate for saying this before, but now it's confirmed straight from the source:

"Hashtags are just not an important thing for reach." Hashtags just aren't driving significant reach anymore.

What REALLY Drives The Algorithm

According to Adam, these are the THREE metrics that matter most:

  1. Shares (especially DM shares)
  • All shares are valued relatively equally
  • DM shares might reach fewer people but are more meaningful
  • This is the #1 signal Instagram looks at

2. Watch Time (not just completion rate)

  • Total seconds watched matters more than percentage
  • They look at both, but longer genuine watch time wins
  • Instagram is NOT trying to make videos longer (unlike YouTube)

3. Likes

  • Still a major signal for engagement
  • Shows content resonates with the audience
  • Helps determine what to recommend

What This Means For YOU

Here's how to actually USE this information:

  1. Focus on creating shareable content
  • Ask yourself: "Would someone send this to a friend?"
  • Create content that sparks conversation
  • Give people a reason to share (value, humor, relatability)

2. Optimize for genuine watch time

  • Hook people in the first 3 seconds
  • Change scenes frequently to maintain attention
  • Don't stretch content just to make it longer

3. Don't stress about algorithm changes

  • Look for patterns, not single post performance
  • Test different content types to see what works
  • Be consistent with what performs well

4. Build across multiple platforms

  • Adam Mosseri himself said this is smart
  • Don't put all your eggs in one basket
  • Use Instagram's diverse features (Stories, Reels, Feed)
